  • Timbis Paragliding Bali

    Timbis Paragliding Bali

Timbis Paragliding has been flying on Bali since 1995 and remains the name most associated with the ridge-soaring cliffs of the Bukit Peninsula. The company launches from the limestone coast near Kutuh and Pandawa Beach, where the southern trade winds hit the cliffs and create smooth lift that lets pilots glide back and forth along the coastline with turquoise water below.

Besides tandem joyrides, Timbis runs structured training for people who want to learn to fly themselves, and it also sells equipment, guides visiting pilots and offers accommodation. For most visitors, though, the draw is a tandem flight with an experienced pilot, no previous experience needed.

    What to expect

You meet at the take-off area on the cliffs, get a short briefing and are clipped into a harness in front of your pilot. After a few running steps into the wind you are airborne, soaring along a coastline that the company describes as around 12 kilometres of ridge between roughly 100 and 1,000 feet. The tandem packages are listed as a one-hour experience, including preparation and landing. East Bali flights over Candidasa offer a different landscape of coast and hills.

From the air you can see the whole sweep of the Bukit coast: white-sand coves, limestone cliffs, seaweed farms and the surf breaking along the reef. Pilots control the flight entirely, so passengers simply sit back in the harness and enjoy the view, and many will let you take the brakes for a moment if conditions allow.

    Packages & prices

    • Fly Tandem Above Pandawa Beach, IDR 1,000,000.
    • Fly Tandem Above Candidasa, IDR 2,700,000.
    • 2-Day Introductory Course, first steps in ground handling and short flights.
    • 4-Day Trainee Pilot Course and 6–7 Day Novice Pilot Course, for those who want to fly solo.
    • Extras, ask about photo and video options when booking.

    Safety & requirements

Flights run only when wind conditions are right, and the company notes that the southerly trade winds arrive reliably from about mid-March through November; outside that window, flights are limited. Weight limits and age rules are not published, so confirm these before booking. Wear closed shoes and follow your pilot’s instructions for take-off and landing, which are the only parts where you need to run.

    Tips

    • Book for a flexible time slot; if the wind is not right, flights are postponed.
    • Bring sunglasses with a strap, sunscreen and a light jacket.
    • Secure your phone or leave it with the ground crew unless your pilot approves filming.
    • Combine the flight with a swim at Pandawa Beach below.
    • Message on WhatsApp the day before to check the forecast.

Landing is usually back at the top of the cliff where you started, so there is no need to arrange transport from the beach.

  • Sobek: Telaga Waja Rafting

    Sobek: Telaga Waja Rafting

Sobek was founded in 1989 and bills itself as Bali’s first professional adventure company, having opened up commercial rafting on the Ayung before expanding east. Its Telaga Waja operation near Muncan in Karangasem is the choice for people who want more punch than the gentler Ubud rivers: the water comes down from the slopes of Mount Agung through narrow rock gorges, and the rapids are rated Class III and above.

The setting is one of the draws. The river winds past terraced rice fields, remnant rainforest and steep walls of volcanic rock, far from the busy south, and the drive itself takes you through rural East Bali. Sobek says it has a long safety record across more than three decades of guided trips.

    What to expect

After pick-up from the south or Ubud, you arrive at the Muncan base for a briefing, gear fitting and a short walk to the river. The run itself takes about two hours, with fast, technical sections separated by quieter pools where guides point out the scenery. At the end you shower, change and sit down to a Balinese buffet lunch before the drive back.

Guides give clear paddle commands and show you how to brace and hold on through the steeper sections, and there are chances to float in calmer pools. The trip suits groups of friends looking for a proper adrenaline hit, and the rural surroundings are a welcome contrast to the crowds of the south.

    Packages & prices

    • Foreign visitors, adults IDR 1,200,000; children IDR 800,000.
    • Domestic visitors, IDR 600,000 per person.
    • Promotions, the site advertises periodic buy-one-get-one and percentage discounts.
    • Schedule, three launch windows each morning (09:00, 10:00, 11:00).
    • Included, professional river guides, helmets and life jackets, dry bag, buffet lunch, showers and towels; transport depending on package.
    • Minimum, two people per booking.

    Safety & requirements

Children can join from age 7, with child pricing up to 15. Because the rapids are bigger than on the Ayung, you should be a confident swimmer and able to paddle hard on command. Keep your helmet and life jacket on throughout, and follow the swimmer-recovery instructions from the briefing. Anyone with back problems, heart conditions or pregnancy should choose a milder option.

    Tips

    • Wear quick-dry clothing and water shoes; bring swimwear, sunscreen and a full change of clothes.
    • The drive from the south is long, so choose an early pick-up and plan little else for the day.
    • Ask about current promotions when booking; they can make a big difference to the price.
    • Combine with a visit to Sidemen or Besakih if you have private transport.
    • The river runs higher after heavy rain in the wet season, making it more intense.

Many visitors say the scenery alone justifies the long drive east.
