Capella Ubud

Capella Ubud takes the idea of a safari camp and places it in the rainforest of Keliki, a village in the hills north of Ubud. Designed by the celebrated landscape architect Bill Bensley, the property is made up of just 22 tents and one lodge, strung along a jungle slope above a river valley. The whole place is built to avoid felling trees, so walkways twist around trunks and the canopy stays intact.

Bensley’s styling is theatrical: each tent is dressed as if it belonged to an early European explorer, with campaign furniture, antique trunks, copper bathtubs and hand-painted details. Despite the canvas walls, the tents are fully air-conditioned and roomy. The camp has collected a long list of accolades, including a MICHELIN Key in 2025 and top rankings in Travel + Leisure’s reader awards.

Rooms & villas

All the tents are one-bedroom and about 173 square metres, and each has a private saltwater pool and an outdoor deck. They are split into four groups by position: Terrace Tents, Forest Tents, Valley Tents and Keliki Tents. The single Lodge has two bedrooms across 217 square metres, suiting families or friends travelling together. Stays are run on a largely inclusive basis, and the small size means the team gets to know guests by name quickly.

Dining

• Mads Lange – the all-day restaurant, serving Indonesian and international dishes using hand-harvested local produce
• Api Jiwa – a dinner restaurant built around open-fire cooking, including a traditional rice-straw technique, with multi-course Asian-inspired menus

Facilities & experiences

Auriga Wellness is the camp’s spa, with three treatment tents, a heated outdoor pool, a gym and yoga. Its treatments follow the phases of the moon, drawing on Balinese traditions. In the evenings a campfire hosts movie screenings with hot chocolate and marshmallows. The team also runs guided walks, adventure-wellness programmes, private dinners in the jungle and visits to nearby villages. Ubud centre is around 20–30 minutes away by car when you want to explore.

Who it suits

Capella Ubud is made for couples and honeymooners who want total immersion in nature without giving up luxury, and for design lovers who enjoy Bensley’s storytelling. It is not the place for anyone who wants a beach, nightlife or a large pool scene; the steep jungle paths also make it less practical for guests with limited mobility. For a special-occasion stay in the Ubud hills, it is hard to beat.

Practical tip: the dry season (roughly April to October) brings clearer mornings and cooler nights in the hills, while the wet season makes the jungle especially lush, with afternoon downpours drumming on the canvas – part of the charm for many guests. With only 23 accommodations, the camp books out well ahead for holidays, so plan early and share any celebrations or dietary needs in advance so the team can prepare.
