Karma Kandara

Karma Kandara spreads across limestone cliffs in Ungasan, on the southern edge of the Bukit Peninsula. Run by Karma Group, it is one of the island’s best-known villa resorts, built around a simple promise: a private pool villa up top, and a secluded beach at the foot of the cliff reached by a small inclined lift.

The architecture is classic Balinese – thatched roofs, carved timber and stone walls set within tropical gardens – and each villa is walled for privacy. At the bottom of the cliff, Karma Beach is a white-sand cove with clear water, loungers and all-day dining, and it has become a destination in its own right.

Rooms & villas

The core of the resort is its Garden View Pool Villas in one-, two-, three- and four-bedroom configurations, each with a private pool, outdoor living pavilion and garden. At the top end, The Residences and Grand Cliff Villa offer the biggest spaces and the best ocean outlooks. The adjoining Mentari Residences add studio, one- and two-bedroom apartments for guests who want a Karma stay at a lower price point. Published rates start from around IDR 17 million++ per night for a one-bedroom pool villa, depending on season.

Facilities & experiences

Karma Spa is set in thatched-roof bales on the cliff, and its Ocean Spa Suite offers recovery treatments including an infrared sauna and ice bath. Families can use the 3 Monkeys Kids Club for children aged 4–12, while active guests have a gym, Muay Thai classes and watersports at the beach. The Sarang Lounge doubles as a rooftop cafe and co-working space with flexible memberships. Uluwatu Temple, Melasti Beach and the surf breaks of the Bukit are all within a short drive.

Who it suits

Karma Kandara suits couples who want a private pool and a beach without crowds, as well as families and groups who can spread out in the larger villas. The inclinator and beach club make it feel like a complete holiday on one site. Because the resort is on a cliff, there are slopes and steps, and the location is quiet – you will need a driver for dining further afield.

Practical tip: Karma Beach is at its best in the morning and early afternoon, before the sun drops behind the cliff. The Bukit’s dry climate means sunny days for most of the year, though the sea can be choppy during the June–August swell. Non-guests may be able to visit the beach club with a minimum spend, but policies change, so check before you go.
