Samsara Ubud

Samsara Ubud is a small villa resort in the village of Kelusa, in the Payangan hills north of Ubud. It is built on a jungle ridge overlooking a green valley, and almost every villa has a private pool that seems to drop straight into the forest. The name comes from the Sanskrit word for the cycle of life, fitting the resort’s calm, reflective mood.

The style is contemporary Balinese, with stone, timber and alang-alang roofs, and the resort is designed with romance in mind – think flower-strewn bathtubs, candlelit dinners and breakfast served in your pool.

Rooms & villas

There are four villa types:

• One Bedroom Pool Villa – around 122 sqm, with a heated private pool and jungle view
• One Bedroom Deluxe Pool Villa – around 122 sqm, in a more elevated position
• Two Bedroom Pool Villa – around 198 sqm, suited to families or friends
• Three Bedroom Pool Villa – around 245 sqm, for larger groups

Villas combine air-conditioned bedrooms with outdoor living spaces and bathrooms that open to the jungle.

Dining

The standout experiences are the Floating Breakfast, a tray of tropical fruit, pastries and hot dishes served in your private pool, and the Romantic Dinner, a five-course private meal set up in a scenic corner of the property. In-villa dining is available for slow evenings.

Facilities & experiences

Chakra Spa offers holistic Balinese therapies and mindful rituals in treatment rooms looking out over the jungle. The Moonlight Cinema sets up films under the stars, and the team can arrange trips to the Tegallalang rice terraces, waterfalls and temples, as well as transport into Ubud.

Who it suits

Samsara Ubud is primarily a couples’ retreat – honeymooners, anniversaries and proposals are its bread and butter. The multi-bedroom villas also work for small families or friends who want privacy. The location is rural and quiet, around 25–30 minutes from central Ubud, so it is best for guests who plan to relax on site and make occasional trips with a driver. Nightlife seekers should look elsewhere.

Practical tip: pre-book special experiences such as the floating breakfast, romantic dinner and spa treatments when you confirm your stay, as they are popular with honeymooners. The Payangan hills are cooler than the coast, especially at night, so pack a light layer. The dry season (roughly April to October) offers clearer skies for jungle views, while the wet season brings dramatic rain and very green scenery.

For day trips, combine the Tegallalang rice terraces with nearby coffee plantations and the temple of Tirta Empul, all reachable by car from the resort.

Kelusa and the surrounding villages are largely agricultural, and quiet walks through the rice fields around the resort show a slower side of the Ubud region that many visitors miss.
