The Yoga Barn

Since opening in 2007, The Yoga Barn has grown from a single wooden studio into Ubud’s best-known yoga and healing campus. Set in a green valley just off Jalan Hanoman, it now runs eight studios and more than 180 classes every week, drawing everyone from first-timers on a week’s holiday to long-stay practitioners and visiting teachers. It is also closely linked with the Bali Spirit Festival, one of Asia’s biggest yoga and music gatherings.

The campus mixes open-sided timber shalas, garden paths and rice-field views with a café, a healing centre and on-site accommodation called The Nest. What makes it distinct is sheer range: in a single day you could take a sunrise Hatha class, a lunchtime Pilates session, an afternoon Yoga Nidra and finish with Ecstatic Dance or a kirtan evening.

What to expect

Classes are grouped into Body, Mind and Spirit. Body covers Vinyasa, Hatha, Power, Yin, Restorative, AcroYoga, Beginner’s Yoga, Fly High (aerial) Yoga, Kundalini, Pilates, PiYo and even Capoeira. Mind includes Yoga Nidra, Flow State Watsu, Himalayan Kriya Yoga and several meditation formats. Spirit brings Qi Gong, Sound Healing, Vocal Activation, Kirtan and the popular Ecstatic Dance, a sober, barefoot free-movement party. Beyond daily classes there are private sessions, workshops, retreats and 50-, 100- and 200-hour teacher trainings.

• Single drop-in – IDR 180,000 (IDR 120,000 for KITAS holders; IDR 100,000 for Indonesians and students aged 10–20).
• 3-class card – IDR 495,000, valid 30 days.
• 5-class card – IDR 780,000, valid 30 days.
• 10-class card – IDR 1,500,000, valid 60 days.
• 20-class card – IDR 2,400,000, valid 60 days.
• 30-day unlimited – IDR 3,300,000.

Some special events, workshops and Ecstatic Dance nights are priced separately.

Safety & requirements

Mats and props are provided in the studios. Tell the teacher about injuries, pregnancy or health conditions before class, and choose beginner-labelled sessions if you are new – some Power, Acro and aerial classes are physically demanding. Classes can fill up, so arrive 10–15 minutes early to register at reception.

Tips

Download The Yoga Barn app (iOS and Android) to check the daily timetable and book. A class card is better value if you plan three or more sessions. Stay for a meal at the Garden Kafe, which serves healthy, largely plant-based dishes and juices. Ecstatic Dance is a signature Ubud experience – come with an open mind and no phone. The campus is a short walk from central Ubud, and Saturday evening hours run later for events.

If you are staying a week or more, check the schedule for workshops and retreats that run over several days – they range from yoga intensives to breathwork and healing modalities. Teachers rotate frequently, so it is worth trying a few different classes before settling on favourites. Practitioners who want a deeper experience can stay on site at The Nest, which puts you steps from early-morning classes.
