About
Sanur Surf School works out of Mertasari at the southern end of Sanur, one of the areas where Bali’s trade winds blow most steadily across a wide, reef-protected lagoon. That combination of shallow water and reliable wind is why Sanur has become the island’s main kitesurfing hub, and the school builds its programme around it, alongside surf lessons on the outer reefs and stand-up paddle sessions in calmer conditions.
Lessons are private or semi-private rather than large groups, so instructors can adapt the pace to each rider. The school uses Duotone kitesurfing equipment and offers packages that take beginners from their first flights with a trainer kite to riding independently.
What to expect
A first kitesurf session begins on the beach with a small training kite, learning how the wind window works and how to control power safely. Once that clicks, you move into the water for body-dragging, and then first water starts with a board. Intermediate sessions focus on riding upwind, board control and changing direction. Surf lessons last two hours and are pitched from beginner to advanced; SUP lessons run for 90 minutes.
Surf lessons head out to the reef breaks off Sanur when swell allows, while SUP sessions take place in the flatter water inside the reef, which is ideal for first-timers and families. Instructors adjust each session to conditions on the day, so the plan may shift with wind and tide.

Safety & requirements
Kitesurfing involves real power, so listen carefully during the beach briefing and never hook in without an instructor’s go-ahead. You should be comfortable swimming in open water. The lagoon becomes very shallow at low tide and the reef has sharp coral, so sessions are timed to the tide; booties are a good idea. Tell the school about any injuries before your lesson.
Tips
- The windiest period in Sanur is typically the dry season, roughly June to September; the school says it teaches year-round.
- Book a package rather than single lessons if you want to ride independently by the end of your trip.
- Bring a rash vest, reef-safe sunscreen and sunglasses with a strap.
- Morning sessions often suit surf and SUP; afternoons usually bring the stronger breeze.
- Contact the school on WhatsApp to lock in a slot that matches the tide.
Sanur’s lagoon is also one of the gentler places in Bali to learn water sports in general, with a long beachfront path that makes it easy to combine a lesson with breakfast or a swim afterwards.
