About
Rip Curl School of Surf is one of Bali’s longest-running surf and water-sports schools, with a flagship in Legian and a dedicated base on the beach at Hotel Prama Sanur Beach. Sanur’s calm, reef-protected lagoon and reliable trade winds make this location ideal for learning to kite, wing and paddle, alongside surf and longboard coaching.
The school’s coaching team holds qualifications such as the Australian Bronze Medallion, International Kiteboarding Organization (IKO) accreditation and PADI dive certification, and it uses current-season boards, kites and wings. That combination of flat water, steady wind and certified instructors makes Sanur one of the most beginner-friendly spots in Bali to try something new on the water.
What to expect
At Sanur the focus is on wind and flat-water sports: kitesurfing, wing surfing, foiling and stand-up paddleboarding, alongside surf and longboard coaching. A typical first lesson starts on the beach with equipment set-up, safety systems and wind theory before moving into waist-deep water. Kitesurf courses progress from kite control to body dragging and then water starts; wing-foil lessons begin with handling the wing on a large, stable board. SUP sessions are ideal for families and complete beginners in the calm morning lagoon.

- Kitesurfing – IKO-structured beginner courses and refresher sessions.

Current prices are listed on the school’s official booking page (via Megatix); rates vary by course length and whether you book private or group sessions.
Safety & requirements
You should be comfortable swimming. Kite and wing lessons depend on the wind – typically strongest in Sanur during the dry season (roughly May to October) – and may be rescheduled if conditions are unsafe. Instructors provide helmets, impact vests and radio or boat support where needed. Let staff know of any injuries or medical conditions before you start.
Tips
Message on WhatsApp to confirm wind and tide before you head over. Book multi-day courses early in the dry season, when Sanur is busiest with kiters. Wear reef boots or ask to borrow them, apply reef-safe sunscreen and bring a rash vest. Mornings are best for SUP; afternoons for wind. The hotel beachfront has cafés for a post-session coffee.
Sanur is an excellent base for a water-sports holiday because conditions are generally predictable: gentle mornings suit paddleboarding and first surf lessons, while the wind typically builds through the day for kiting and winging. Multi-day courses are the fastest way to gain independence on a kite or wing, as much of the learning happens in the first few sessions. Riders who already have their own gear can ask about equipment storage and rental add-ons.
