Bedugul

Lakes & Highlands

About Bedugul

Bedugul is the cool highland area around Lake Bratan in Tabanan's central mountains. Pura Ulun Danu Beratan, the temple that seems to float on the lake, is one of the most photographed sights in Bali.

The cooler climate supports vegetable, fruit and flower farms, the Bali Botanic Garden and a treetop adventure park in the forest.

Bedugul sits at around 1,500 metres above sea level on the main road across the island, about 48 kilometres north of Denpasar and 20 kilometres south of Singaraja. The area takes in several villages, among them Bedugul itself, Candikuning, Pancasari, Pacung and Wanagiri. Lake Bratan is one of three crater lakes here, alongside Lake Buyan and Lake Tamblingan. Tamblingan, the smallest, lies just across the border in Buleleng at 1,217 metres, with the 10th-century Pura Dalem Tamblingan and other temples on a forested shore where orchids grow and macaques roam. The Bali Botanic Garden, opened in 1959, covers 157.5 hectares and holds some 2,000 plant species. Bedugul suits travellers who enjoy cool mountain air, lake views, gardens and quiet walks.
