About Canggu
Canggu is a village on Bali's west coast in North Kuta, about 10 km north-west of Kuta. Once rice paddies and coconut groves, it began drawing surfers after an international surf event in 1990 and has since grown into one of Bali's busiest social hubs.
Beach temples such as Pura Batu Bolong still sit between the surf breaks, cafes, coworking spaces and the beach clubs of Berawa.
Canggu is one of the villages of North Kuta District in Badung Regency, around 12 km north-west of Denpasar. Its roughly 10-kilometre stretch of south-west coast takes in a string of beaches: Echo Beach (also called Mejan Stone Beach), Batu Bolong, Canggu Beach, Kayu Putih, Pererenan, Berawa, Seseh, Mengening and the quieter Nelayan Beach. Besides Pura Batu Bolong, the old beachfront temple of Pura Batu Mejan and Pura Merajapati on Jalan Batu Bolong are worth a respectful look. Daily life runs along Jalan Raya Canggu, Jalan Batu Bolong, Jalan Padang Linjong and Jalan Tanah Barak, home to Deus Ex Machina's Temple of Enthusiasm, which helped make the area famous. Around 324 hotels and other lodgings were registered here in 2023, and Canggu suits surfers, remote workers and social travellers.
