Lovina

Dolphins & Black Sand

About Lovina

Lovina is a strip of villages on Bali's north coast, just west of Singaraja in Buleleng. Its black-sand beaches and calm sea are a world away from the busy south.

The area is best known for its dawn boat trips to see wild dolphins, and makes an easy base for the waterfalls and hot springs of the north.

Lovina takes its name from a home owned by Pandji Tisna (1908-1978), a Regent of Buleleng who pioneered tourism on Bali in the early 1950s. The strip runs from about 5 to 15 kilometres west of Singaraja and takes in, from east to west, the villages of Pemaron, Tukad Mungga, Anturan, Banyualit, Kalibukbuk, Kaliasem and Temukus, spread across the Buleleng and Banjar districts. Dolphin trips leave early in the morning and last about two hours. Sing Sing Waterfall lies in Temukus, and in the hills of Banjar District stands Brahmavihara-Arama, completed in 1969 and described as Bali's largest Buddhist monastery. Since 2019, locals have installed around 1,000 bio-rock structures offshore to help regrow coral. Lovina suits travellers wanting a calm, unhurried base in the north.
