About Bangli

Bangli is Bali's only landlocked regency, climbing from the central foothills to the Batur caldera in the north. Pura Kehen, its main temple, dates from the 11th century.

The regency is also home to Penglipuran, a car-free traditional village with matching stone gates, and to the volcano and lake at Kintamani.

Bangli is made up of four districts: Bangli, Susut, Tembuku and Kintamani, which alone covers more than 70 percent of the regency. Mount Batur, an active volcano, rises to 1,717 metres at the centre of two nested calderas, and summit trekking is an important part of the local economy. The caldera joined UNESCO's Global Geoparks Network in 2012, and the Batur Geopark Museum explains its geology. On the eastern shore of Lake Batur, Trunyan is one of the best-known villages of the Bali Aga, the island's original inhabitants, and keeps its own funeral customs. Nearer the capital, Demulih Hill lies about 3 kilometres west of Bangli town, and Tukad Cepung is one of several waterfalls in the regency. Bangli suits hikers, culture seekers and lovers of highland scenery.
