About Kuta
Kuta sits on the south-west coast just north of Ngurah Rai International Airport. In the 19th century it was a trading post run by the Danish trader Mads Lange; from the 1970s it became Bali's first big surf and backpacker town.
Its long sandy beach is still one of the best places on the island to learn to surf and to watch the sunset, with Waterbom and the shopping streets of Legian close by.
Kuta is the capital of Kuta District, which also takes in Kedonganan, Tuban, Legian and Seminyak. The urban village covers 7.23 km² and is made up of 13 neighbourhoods (lingkungan): Pelasa, Temacun, Pemamoran, Pengabetan, Pering, Pande Mas, Jaba Jero, Buni, Tegal, Tebasari, Anyar, Segara and Abianbase. It lies about 12 km south of central Denpasar, and in light traffic the beach is around 10 minutes from the airport. The sand runs for about 2.5 km and continues north as Legian Beach. The 2002 Bali Bombing Memorial, a carved stone monument dedicated on 12 October 2004, carries the names of the 202 people who died. Kuta suits first-time visitors and beginner surfers who like having everything within walking distance.
