Kintamani is a highland district of Bangli Regency on the rim of the Batur caldera. From the ridge you look down on Mount Batur, an active volcano, and Lake Batur beside it.

It is the starting point for the famous sunrise treks up Batur, and home to hot springs on the lake shore and Trunyan, a Bali Aga village across the water.

Kintamani District is divided into 48 villages, 19 of them Bali Aga villages spread along the foot of Mount Batur, the lake shore and the valleys. The volcano rises to 1,717 metres inside a caldera about 10 by 13 kilometres across, and in 2012 UNESCO added the Batur caldera to its Global Geoparks Network. On the outer rim stands Pura Ulun Danu Batur, dedicated to Vishnu and Dewi Danu, goddess of the lake; it was rebuilt here after the 1926 eruption moved Batur village uphill. From Penelokan you see the black lava fields and the crescent-shaped blue lake together. The district is roughly two hours by road from Denpasar and suits hikers and travellers drawn to volcanic landscapes and village culture.
