About Klungkung
Klungkung is Bali's smallest regency, with its capital at Semarapura. Its rulers, the Dewa Agung, were long regarded as the high kings of Bali.
The Kertha Gosa pavilion, the royal court of justice, has ceilings painted in the classical Kamasan style. In 1908 the last king and his followers died resisting the Dutch in a puputan. The regency also includes the Nusa Penida islands.
The regency is divided into four districts: Klungkung, Banjarangkan, Dawan and Nusa Penida, the last of which covers the offshore islands and more than half of the regency's land. Kamasan village near Semarapura remains the home of traditional wayang-style painting, and the 28-metre Puputan Klungkung Monument stands in the town centre. On the coast in Dawan, Pura Goa Lawah is one of the Sad Kahyangan, the six great temples of Bali, built around a cave full of bats and traditionally dated to 1007. Offshore, Nusa Lembongan is about 30 minutes by speedboat from Sanur and is linked to Nusa Ceningan by a yellow suspension bridge, while Nusa Penida is known for Kelingking Beach and Broken Beach. Klungkung suits history lovers, surfers, divers and island hoppers.
