About Sanur
Sanur is a calm beach town on the east coast of Denpasar, about 30 minutes from the airport. Its Belanjong pillar carries Sanskrit and Old Balinese inscriptions dated 914 AD, among the oldest found in Bali.
The Belgian painter Le Mayeur lived here from 1932 to 1958, and his beach house is now a museum. A long beachfront path, reef-sheltered water and the fast boats to Nusa Penida and Lembongan make Sanur a relaxed base.
Sanur is an urban village (kelurahan) in South Denpasar District, which also includes the villages of Sanur Kaja and Sanur Kauh and the island of Serangan, known for its surf. The beachfront path heads south past Sindhu, Karang and Semawang beaches, and the coast continues to Mertasari Beach; about 5.1 km of shoreline, from Matahari Terbit Beach to Mertasari, was reclaimed in 2008. The calm water is good for snorkelling and diving at all levels, as well as kitesurfing, while Sanur Stone Park displays Bronze Age megaliths and the Bali Orchid Garden lies about 3 km north. Each year the community hosts the Sanur Village Festival, organised by a local foundation set up in 1965. Sanur suits travellers who prefer calm water and a slower pace.
