Sanur Beach

Sanur is one of Bali’s oldest beach resorts and the most relaxed of the south’s major beaches. Facing east toward Nusa Penida, its shoreline is protected by an offshore reef that keeps the water inside the lagoon calm and shallow, making it ideal for families, paddle-boarders and gentle swims. It’s also the best place in South Bali to watch the sun rise over the sea, often with Mount Agung visible to the north on clear mornings.

A paved beachfront path of around 5 kilometres runs along the sand from Mertasari in the south to Sanur’s northern end, lined with hotels, warungs, cafés, fishing boats and shaded trees. Walking or cycling it at dawn is a local ritual.

What to see

Sanur has a long history as one of the first places foreigners settled in Bali. The Museum Le Mayeur preserves the beachfront home of Belgian painter Adrien-Jean Le Mayeur, who lived here with his wife, the dancer Ni Pollok, from the 1930s. At Pura Blanjong stands a stone pillar with an inscription dated to 914 AD, one of the oldest dated records in Bali. Colourful jukung outrigger fishing boats line the sand, and kitesurfers take over the southern end on windy afternoons. The beach is also the departure point for fast boats to Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan from Sanur harbour.

How to visit

• Beach access is free along numerous lanes; public parking is at Sindhu, Semawang and Mertasari beaches.
• Swim at mid to high tide – at low tide the lagoon becomes very shallow with seagrass and sea urchins.
• Rent a bicycle to ride the beach path, or hire a stand-up paddleboard or kayak.
• Snorkelling trips to the outer reef leave from the beach by jukung.
• Sanur’s night markets, such as Sindhu, are good for cheap local food.

Etiquette & dress

Keep swimwear to the beach and put on a shirt or cover-up on the promenade and in restaurants. Sanur’s village communities hold frequent ceremonies on the beach; watch respectfully and don’t walk through offerings. Don’t step on seagrass or coral at low tide. Cyclists should give way to walkers on the path. Bring reef-safe sunscreen and take your rubbish home.

Sanur appeals to slower travellers, families and long-stay expats. It lacks big nightlife but has a friendly, village-like feel, with plenty of cafés and yoga studios within walking distance of the beach.

Early morning is the magic hour here: fishermen bring in their catch, elderly locals take their daily swim, and offerings appear on the sand as the sky turns pink over Nusa Penida.
