Crystal Bay
About
After the cliffs and viewpoints of west Nusa Penida, Crystal Bay is where you finally get to touch the water. The bay curves around a stretch of pale sand framed by green hills, with a little rocky islet sitting just offshore and the sea living up to its name on calm mornings.
It is the island’s classic spot for an easy snorkel straight from the beach, with coral and reef fish close to shore, and many boat trips and dive boats also stop here. Warungs and beanbags line the back of the sand, so it doubles as a relaxed place to sit with a coconut between sightseeing stops.
Come back late in the day and the mood changes: the sun drops behind the islet, the boats head home and the bay glows gold. It is one of the most popular sunset spots on Nusa Penida, and an easy end to a west-coast day.
What to see
The bay lies in Banjar Penida, Sakti village, about 15 km from the main harbour. Around 50 metres offshore stands Batu Mejinong, a small coral islet that shelters the inner bay from the swell and makes the sunset view. Underwater, the reef draws snorkellers and divers, and from roughly July to October divers in the wider area sometimes spot the ocean sunfish (mola mola), though sightings from the beach are rare.
Stairs at the left end of the beach lead over the headland to Padang and Pandan beaches, the start of a long coastal walk towards Broken Beach for fit, well-prepared hikers.
How to visit
- Snorkel inside the sheltered inner bay only; currents pick up fast near the channel and around the islet.
- There are no lifeguards; check conditions, read the warning flags and never swim alone.
- Go early, roughly 07.30-10.00, for calmer water and fewer people; arrive 45-60 minutes before sunset for the evening light.
- Since 01/09/2026 Crystal Bay has its own site ticket; bring small rupiah notes for the gate and parking.
- Snorkel gear can be rented from beach vendors; agree the price before you take it.
- Bring reef-safe sunscreen and water shoes for the rocky entry points.
- Hikers heading to Broken Beach should start before 15.00 and allow 1.5-2 hours one way.
Etiquette & dress
Swimwear is fine on the sand, but cover up when walking to the warungs or through the village. Do not stand on or touch the coral, keep the beach clean, and give way to fishing and tour boats near the shoreline.
Combine it with
- Broken Beach (Pasih Uug) a circular bay under a natural arch, about 40 minutes by car.
- Angel’s Billabong a tidal rock pool beside Broken Beach, about 40 minutes by car.
- Kelingking Beach the island’s famous headland viewpoint, around 30-45 minutes by car.
