Tabanan Regency runs from the south-west coast up to the central highlands and is known as Bali's rice bowl. Its Jatiluwih terraces are part of the subak irrigation landscape inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage list in 2012.

The regency is also home to Tanah Lot, the sea temple on a rock off the coast, and to the cool highland lakes around Bedugul.

Tabanan Regency is divided into 10 districts and 133 villages, and rice fields cover about 28 percent of its land. Its Indian Ocean coastline runs for 37 kilometres, with beaches such as Balian, Yeh Gangga, Kelating and Soka. In the north, Mount Batukaru rises to 2,276 metres; on its southern slope stands Pura Luhur Batukaru, first built in the 11th century, restored in 1959 and one of the island's directional temples. Near Bedugul, Pura Ulun Danu Beratan, built in 1633, sits on the shore of Lake Beratan. Other stops include Alas Kedaton, the Bali Botanic Garden, the Bali Butterfly Park and the Subak Museum. Tabanan suits travellers interested in rice-farming culture, temples and a slower pace along the coast.
