About Buleleng
Buleleng is Bali's largest regency, running along the whole north coast, with its capital at Singaraja. The kingdom was founded by Gusti Panji Sakti in the 17th century and fell to the Dutch in 1849; Singaraja then served as the capital of Bali until 1958.
Today the north is quieter than the south, with black-sand beaches at Lovina, dolphins at dawn and waterfalls such as Sekumpul and Git Git in the hills.
Buleleng is divided into nine districts: Gerokgak, Seririt, Busungbiu and Banjar in the west, and Sukasada, Buleleng, Sawan, Kubutambahan and Tejakula in the east, with 129 villages and 19 urban wards between them. In the hills of Banjar district near Lovina you will find hot springs and Brahmavihara Arama, a Buddhist monastery completed in 1969. East of Singaraja stand the temples of Pura Beji at Sangsit and Pura Meduwe Karang, and Gedong Kirtya keeps a library of palm-leaf manuscripts. In the far west, Menjangan Island lies within West Bali National Park and has some of the best-preserved coral reefs in the area. Craft villages include Banyuning for clay work and Beratan for gold and silver jewellery. Buleleng suits divers, snorkellers and temple lovers.
