About Jembrana
Jembrana is Bali's wild west, facing Java across the Bali Strait, with its capital at Negara and the ferry port at Gilimanuk. Much of the regency is forest, including part of the West Bali National Park.
It is famous for makepung, buffalo races that celebrate the rice harvest from July to November, accompanied by jegog bamboo music.
Jembrana is divided into five districts, from west to east Melaya, Negara, Jembrana, Mendoyo and Pekutatan, with 51 rural villages and 10 urban kelurahan between them. Mount Merbuk rises to 1,386 metres in Jembrana District. Pura Rambut Siwi, the regency's biggest temple, takes its name from the legend that the priest Nirartha left a lock of his hair (rambut) to protect it, and Perancak is where he is said to have landed in Bali around 1492. Along the coast is Medewi Beach, while the sacred Bunut Bolong tree stands between Asahduren and Manggissari, 9 kilometres from Pekutatan. Palasari is a Catholic village that still keeps its local culture. Jembrana suits travellers happy to head well off the busy tourist trail.
