About Nusa Penida
Nusa Penida is an island off Bali's south-east coast and a district of Klungkung Regency, together with its smaller neighbours Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan. It covers almost two thirds of Klungkung's land.
Fast boats from Sanur reach it in well under an hour. The island is known for its dramatic cliffs and beaches such as Kelingking and Diamond Beach, and for diving with manta rays.
Nusa Penida District is divided into 16 villages, with its administrative centre at Sampalan, and the main island can be reached through four docks. Its interior is hilly karst country rising to 524 metres, with Mount Mundi as the highest point. Together with Lembongan and Ceningan, the island forms a bird sanctuary: a rehabilitation programme released 64 cage-bred Bali starlings, a critically endangered species, and by 2009 their number had passed 100. Divers can choose from sites such as Manta Point (Batu Lumbung), Penida Bay, Batu Meling, Batu Abah, Toya Pakeh and Malibu Point, and in December 2024 a coral colony covering about 4,000 square metres was found in its waters. The island suits divers, snorkellers and travellers who enjoy rugged scenery.
