Odysseys Surf School

Odysseys Surf School has been teaching beginners to stand up on Kuta’s forgiving beach break since October 2003. The school operates from the arcade of the Mercure Kuta hotel on Jalan Pantai Kuta, only about ten metres from the sand, which means no long walks carrying a board and easy access to showers and lockers afterwards.

Kuta Beach is one of the best places in Bali to learn, thanks to sandy bottoms and rolling whitewater, and Odysseys builds its lessons around those conditions. The school’s big promise is that you will stand up on your first lesson – if not, it offers a free extended lesson – and small group sizes of up to four students keep coaching personal.

What to expect

Lessons begin with a beach briefing on safety, ocean awareness and pop-up technique, followed by time in the water with your instructor pushing you into waves and giving feedback. Beginners stay in the whitewater; intermediate surfers can book lessons that move out to unbroken waves, and surf tours visit other breaks around the island. Lessons are scheduled around the tide, with a maximum of two sessions a day.

Every lesson includes boards, rash vests, helmets, leashes, insurance, free lockers, changing rooms, showers, towels and mineral water, plus free hotel pick-up from Kuta, Seminyak, Legian, Jimbaran, Sanur and Nusa Dua. A certificate is available on request.

Safety & requirements

Students must be aged 7 to 65. You do not need to be a strong swimmer for whitewater lessons, but you should be comfortable in the water. Helmets and soft-top boards are standard, and instructors stay beside students in the water throughout.

Tips

Book a day or two ahead in peak season and let the school know your level so you are matched with the right group. Apply waterproof sunscreen and wear a rash vest to avoid board rash. A three-to-five lesson series builds skills far faster than a one-off. Lessons do not run on Nyepi, Bali’s Day of Silence, when the whole island shuts down.

Kuta Beach conditions change with the tide and season, which is why the school sets lesson times each day rather than running fixed slots. After your lesson, you can use the changing rooms and showers at the hotel arcade, then walk straight onto Kuta Beach to practise if the surf is small.
