Handara Gate

BedugulThe highland gate in the mist

About

Few doorways in Bali are as instantly recognisable as Handara Gate. A tall, symmetrical candi bentar, the traditional Balinese split gate, stands at the entrance to Handara Golf & Resort in Pancasari, high in the cool Bedugul highlands. Step into the right spot and the two carved towers frame a road that seems to disappear into green hills and drifting cloud.

It is not a temple and there is nothing to explore behind it. The draw is the picture itself: mossy stone, manicured lawn and mountain forest, often softened by morning mist. Visitors queue for a few minutes in front of the gate, strike a pose, then move on.

Go with the right expectations and it is a fun, quick stop on a highland day trip. Arrive early, bring a warm layer and pair it with the lakes, temples and waterfalls a few minutes away.

What to see

The gate was built in classic Balinese style as part of the resort’s original design and only became a travel icon in the 2010s, when social media turned it into one of the island’s signature photo frames. Indonesia’s official tourism site describes it as resort access that is now a well-known photo spot, admired for its symmetry against mountains, trees and mist. Ticket time is short, so plan your shot before you reach the front of the line.

How to visit

  • Open daily 06.00-19.00 according to the national tourism board; arrive before 09.00 for softer light, cooler air and shorter queues.
  • Buy your ticket at the kiosk after the parking area; you receive a number and staff call you when it is your turn.
  • Each ticket covers a few minutes of photos at the gate, so have your camera settings and poses ready.
  • Staff can take the photo for you for a small extra fee.
  • Drones and tripods need permission from the resort; drone and pre-wedding packages cost extra.
  • The highlands sit above 1,100 m, so pack a light jacket and rain layer, and keep your timing flexible in case of thick cloud.
  • Your ticket does not include access to the resort grounds.

Etiquette & dress

There is no formal dress code, but this is a working resort entrance with traditional Balinese architecture, so dress neatly, keep your time at the gate short, follow the queue and the staff’s directions, and do not climb on the stonework.

Combine it with

  • Ulun Danu Beratan Temple Bali’s famous lakeside water temple, about 10 minutes south.
  • Bali Botanic Garden orchids, giant trees and cool forest walks, about 10 minutes away.
  • Banyumala Twin Waterfalls a refreshing cold-water swim near Wanagiri, about 20 minutes north-west.
