About
Hujan Locale is chef Will Meyrick’s love letter to Indonesian cooking, tucked onto Jalan Sri Wedari just off Ubud’s main road. The menu traces a line from the recipes you would find at a roadside warung or night market through to more contemporary interpretations, always built on locally sourced produce and the island’s spice pastes.
The restaurant occupies a double-storey building with a charming rooftop and a view across to a neighbouring temple, which gives it that unmistakable Ubud feeling. It is central enough to walk to from the Royal Palace and the art market, yet the atmosphere upstairs feels calm and removed from the traffic below. Hujan is adults-focused: children under 12 are not admitted, which makes it a popular pick for couples.
The food
Food comes family style, so order a handful of dishes and share. Expect regional classics such as slow-cooked beef rendang and Balinese-style seafood, alongside grilled meats, fragrant curries and vegetable dishes lifted with sambal and fresh herbs. The kitchen caters well for dietary needs, with vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options clearly available, so it’s a relaxed choice for groups with mixed requirements.
Signature dishes
- Beef rendang, slow-cooked until tender in a rich coconut and spice paste
- Balinese-style seafood, fish and shellfish with local spice blends
- Street-food share plates, snacks and small dishes inspired by warung cooking
- Vegetarian and vegan plates built around tempeh, tofu and local greens
The space
Downstairs is lively and open to the street; upstairs is where you want to be for dinner, with rooftop seating and the temple outlook. The bar keeps pouring until 23:00, so it also works for a cocktail after exploring central Ubud. Private events and group bookings can be arranged directly with the team.
Tips for your visit
- Reservations are highly recommended, particularly for dinner and upstairs seating.
- No children under 12, plan accordingly if travelling as a family.
- There is no dedicated parking; arrive by scooter, taxi or on foot and use nearby public parking.
- Book via WhatsApp for the quickest response.
- It’s open all day from noon, so a late lunch is a good way to beat the dinner rush.
Why Indonesian food here
Chef Will Meyrick is known for travelling widely through the archipelago to learn recipes directly from home cooks and street vendors, and Hujan Locale is where that research is most accessible. Rather than fusion, the kitchen aims for faithful flavours presented in a comfortable setting, so it is a good bridge between warung eating and fine dining. If you are spending several days in Ubud, it pairs nicely with a babi guling lunch or a cooking class: the same spice pastes and techniques turn up across the menu.
The central location also means you can walk here after an evening dance performance at Ubud Palace, which usually finishes in time for a late dinner.
For travellers who want to understand Indonesian food beyond nasi goreng, without leaving central Ubud, Hujan Locale remains one of the most dependable tables in town.
