Timbis Paragliding Bali

Timbis Paragliding has been flying on Bali since 1995 and remains the name most associated with the ridge-soaring cliffs of the Bukit Peninsula. The company launches from the limestone coast near Kutuh and Pandawa Beach, where the southern trade winds hit the cliffs and create smooth lift that lets pilots glide back and forth along the coastline with turquoise water below.

Besides tandem joyrides, Timbis runs structured training for people who want to learn to fly themselves, and it also sells equipment, guides visiting pilots and offers accommodation. For most visitors, though, the draw is a tandem flight with an experienced pilot, no previous experience needed.

What to expect

You meet at the take-off area on the cliffs, get a short briefing and are clipped into a harness in front of your pilot. After a few running steps into the wind you are airborne, soaring along a coastline that the company describes as around 12 kilometres of ridge between roughly 100 and 1,000 feet. The tandem packages are listed as a one-hour experience, including preparation and landing. East Bali flights over Candidasa offer a different landscape of coast and hills.

From the air you can see the whole sweep of the Bukit coast: white-sand coves, limestone cliffs, seaweed farms and the surf breaking along the reef. Pilots control the flight entirely, so passengers simply sit back in the harness and enjoy the view, and many will let you take the brakes for a moment if conditions allow.

Safety & requirements

Flights run only when wind conditions are right, and the company notes that the southerly trade winds arrive reliably from about mid-March through November; outside that window, flights are limited. Weight limits and age rules are not published, so confirm these before booking. Wear closed shoes and follow your pilot’s instructions for take-off and landing, which are the only parts where you need to run.

Tips

• Book for a flexible time slot; if the wind is not right, flights are postponed.
• Bring sunglasses with a strap, sunscreen and a light jacket.
• Secure your phone or leave it with the ground crew unless your pilot approves filming.
• Combine the flight with a swim at Pandawa Beach below.
• Message on WhatsApp the day before to check the forecast.

Landing is usually back at the top of the cliff where you started, so there is no need to arrange transport from the beach.
