Bali Bird Park

Bali Bird Park in Batubulan is one of the island’s most enjoyable wildlife attractions, especially for families. Set in shady, well-kept gardens between Denpasar and Ubud, the park houses more than 1,000 birds from over 250 species, arranged in themed zones that recreate habitats from Indonesia, Africa and South America.

What sets it apart is the walk-through design. Rather than peering into cages, you stroll inside large aviaries where birds fly overhead and perch beside the path. The park is also active in conservation through its Fighting Extinction programme, with a focus on endangered species such as the Bali starling, lesser adjutant, lesser bird-of-paradise and salmon-crested cockatoo. Komodo dragons live on site too, so it doubles as a reptile stop.

What to expect

Allow two to three hours to follow the loop. Highlights include the Papua rainforest zone with its birds-of-paradise, colourful cockatoo and parrot enclosures, the endangered Bali starlings and the Komodo dragon exhibit. Throughout the day there are free-flight Bird of Prey shows featuring eagles and owls, plus scheduled feeding sessions where you can get close to lorikeets and other species. Shows and feedings run between roughly 09:30 and 16:30.

Safety & requirements

Paths are mostly flat and shaded, suitable for strollers. Keep hands away from beaks during feeding sessions and follow keepers’ instructions. Do not feed birds outside official sessions. Hold on to hats and loose items in the walk-in aviaries.

Tips

Check the daily schedule on the official website on the morning of your visit and plan your route around the Bird of Prey show. Come early for cooler temperatures and more active birds. Bring insect repellent and a camera with zoom. The park pairs easily with nearby Batubulan stone-carving workshops, the Sukawati art market or a Barong dance performance in the morning.

Families visiting with small children will find the park a comfortable size – it is compact enough to cover on foot without tiring young legs, yet varied enough to keep them busy for a morning. Photographers should bring a lens with some reach for the free-flight shows and the canopy-level aviaries. There are cafés and rest areas throughout the park, so you can break up the visit with a snack and a sit-down in the shade. On rainy days much of the park remains enjoyable thanks to covered areas and dense tree cover, although shows may be adjusted.
