Melasti Beach

Melasti Beach sits at the southern tip of the Bukit Peninsula in Ungasan, not far from Uluwatu. Like neighbouring Pandawa, it was once an isolated cove reachable only by clambering down the cliffs; today a winding road cut straight through towering limestone walls delivers visitors almost onto the sand, and the drive down is one of the most photographed in Bali.

The beach itself is a long strip of pale sand facing clear turquoise water, framed by sheer white cliffs. It has become one of the best-developed beaches in the south, with several large beach clubs, but it’s still easy to find a quiet patch of sand, and the evening Kecak dance performed near the beach adds a cultural twist to sunset.

What to see

Stop at the viewpoints on the cliff road for the classic shot of the road curving down to the sea. The name Melasti refers to the Balinese purification ceremony in which temple effigies are carried to the sea before Nyepi, the Day of Silence, and local communities still hold rituals here. The water is generally calm near the shore, with good visibility on clear days. At low tide rock pools and reef flats appear at the edges of the beach. In the evening, a Kecak performance is staged near the beach for a separate ticket.

How to visit

• Pay the small entrance fee at the village ticket post at the top of the road; parking is charged separately.
• Swim in the marked areas and watch the flags, conditions change with the tide and swell.
• Beach clubs along the sand offer day beds and pools for a minimum spend; the public beach is free to use once you’ve paid the entry.
• Bring shade, there’s little natural cover on the sand.
• Stay for the sunset Kecak (ticket bought on site) if you haven’t seen it at Uluwatu Temple.

Etiquette & dress

Swimwear is fine on the beach but cover up on the road and in warungs. Respect ceremonies, if a procession arrives at the shore, give it space and avoid walking through offerings. Don’t climb the cliffs, which are unstable. Use bins or take rubbish with you, and choose reef-safe sunscreen.

The road is steep and has sharp bends, so scooter riders should take it slowly, especially on the way back up after dark. Weekends bring many local families and can be busy; weekday mornings are the calmest.

For photographers, the best light on the cliffs comes in the late afternoon, when the limestone glows gold and the water turns deep blue. Arrive early enough to find a spot before the sunset crowd.

• Garuda Wisnu Kencana Cultural Park, about 15 minutes north.
• Uluwatu Temple, 25 minutes west.
• Nyang Nyang and Green Bowl beaches for a wilder feel.
