About

On the wild west coast of Nusa Penida, the sea has carved a near-perfect circle into the limestone. Locals call it Pasih Uug, Balinese for broken beach, and the name makes sense the moment you arrive: a round cove of turquoise water, closed off by cliffs, with a single arched opening where the ocean pushes in from the open sea.

This is a place to look rather than swim. A walking path follows the cliff rim all the way around the bowl, so you can watch the swell surge through the arch from different angles, spot the land bridge you are standing on, and look down into water that shifts from emerald to deep blue as the light moves.

Afternoons bring a softer glow and, on lucky days, the chance of seeing manta rays gliding past the outer cliffs. Mornings are quieter. Either way, give yourself time to do the full loop and then wander a few minutes on to Angel’s Billabong next door.

History & meaning

Broken Beach began as a sea cave. Over a long time the waves wore away its base and widened the gap until the roof was left standing as a natural bridge, with the trapped water forming the round bay you see today. The site sits in Banjar Sumpang, Bunga Mekar village, and grew from a remote spot with no proper road into one of the island’s best-known stops.

In May 2026 the cliffs here hosted the opening round of the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series, the first time the event came to Bali, with divers launching from 21 and 27 metre platforms into the bay.

How to visit

  • Buy the Nusa Penida island retribution online before you cross; the QR code is checked on arrival.
  • Since 01/09/2026 one site ticket covers both Broken Beach and Angel’s Billabong; carry small rupiah notes for the gate and parking.
  • Walk the clifftop loop (allow 30-60 minutes) and stay well back from the edge, which is unfenced in places and can crumble.
  • There is no safe way down to the water; do not try to climb into the bay.
  • Arrive early morning or late afternoon; roughly 11.00-15.00 is the busiest stretch with day-tour groups.
  • Wear proper shoes and bring water, a hat and sunscreen; there is little shade on the cliffs.
  • The road from Toyapakeh is now paved almost all the way, but drive slowly; many visitors use a local driver.

Etiquette & dress

Casual, sun-ready clothing is fine. Respect the warning signs and barriers, keep drones away from other visitors, take your rubbish with you, and be patient at popular photo spots rather than stepping past the edge for a better angle.

Combine it with

  • Angel’s Billabong a natural rock pool at the sea’s edge, a few minutes’ walk.
  • Kelingking Beach the famous T-Rex shaped headland, about 20-30 minutes by car.
  • Crystal Bay a sheltered beach for snorkelling and sunset, about 40 minutes by car.

Getting there

Take a fast boat from Sanur to Nusa Penida (about 30-45 minutes; Sanur is roughly 1 hour by road from Ubud and 45-75 minutes from Seminyak or Canggu), or the slower ferry from Padang Bai (about 1.5 hours). From Toyapakeh the drive to Broken Beach takes about 40 minutes on a mostly paved road; there is no public transport on the island, so hire a driver or scooter.
